Al-Maarij (The Paths of Ascent)
Translation
Verses 1-44
بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ (1)
A questioner questioned about a torture bound to happen.
[Al Quran ; 70:1]
لِلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ (2)
To the unbelievers, there will not be for it a preventer.
[Al Quran ; 70:2]
مِنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ (3)
From Allah, the Possessor of the paths of ascent (to Him).
[Al Quran ; 70:3]
تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ (4)
The angels and the spirit ascend to Him in a day which is the measure of fifty thousand years.

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا (5)
So be patient with goodly patience.
[Al Quran ; 70:5]
إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا (6)
Indeed, they see it distant.
[Al Quran ; 70:6]
وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا (7)
And We see it near.
[Al Quran ; 70:7]
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ (8)
The day the sky will be like molten copper.
[Al Quran ; 70:8]
وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ (9)
And the mountains will be like wool.
[Al Quran ; 70:9]
وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا (10)
And no devoted friend will ask (another) devoted friend.
[Al Quran ; 70:10]
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ (11)
They will be made to see each other. The criminal wishes that he could be ransomed from the torture of that day by his sons.

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ (12)
And his wife and his brother.
[Al Quran ; 70:12]
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ (13)
And his tribe which shelters him.
[Al Quran ; 70:13]
وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنْجِيهِ (14)
And whoever is on earth all together, so it could save him.
[Al Quran ; 70:14]
كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ (15)
No! Indeed, it is a flaming fire.
[Al Quran ; 70:15]
نَزَّاعَةً لِلشَّوَىٰ (16)
Removing the exterior (skin).
[Al Quran ; 70:16]
تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ (17)
It calls whoever turned his back and went away.
[Al Quran ; 70:17]
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ (18)
And collected (wealth) then hoarded.
[Al Quran ; 70:18]
إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا (19)
Indeed, the human is created anxious.
[Al Quran ; 70:19]
إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا (20)
When evil touches him, (he is) impatient.
[Al Quran ; 70:20]
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا (21)
And when good touches him, (he is) withholding.
[Al Quran ; 70:21]
إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ (22)
Except those who pray.
[Al Quran ; 70:22]
الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ (23)
Those who are in their prayers constant.
[Al Quran ; 70:23]
وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌ (24)
And those in whose wealth is a known right.
[Al Quran ; 70:24]
لِلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ (25)
For the seeker and the deprived.
[Al Quran ; 70:25]
وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ (26)
And those who believe in the day of recompense.
[Al Quran ; 70:26]
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ مِنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِمْ مُشْفِقُونَ (27)
And those who are, of the torture of their Lord, fearful.
[Al Quran ; 70:27]
إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ (28)
Indeed, the torture of their Lord is not that from which one is safe.
[Al Quran ; 70:28]
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ (29)
And those who are, concerning their private parts, guarding.
[Al Quran ; 70:29]
إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ (30)
Except upon their spouses or what their oaths possess (as spouses), for indeed, they are not to be blamed.
[Al Quran ; 70:30]
فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ (31)
And whoever seeks beyond that, then it is them who are the perpetrators.
[Al Quran ; 70:31]
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ (32)
And those who are to their trusts and their covenant careful.
[Al Quran ; 70:32]
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ (33)
And those who are in their testimonies upright.
[Al Quran ; 70:33]
وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ (34)
And those who are, concerning their prayer, maintainers.
[Al Quran ; 70:34]
أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُكْرَمُونَ (35)
It is them who will be in gardens, honoured.
[Al Quran ; 70:35]
فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ (36)
So what is the matter with those who have disbelieved, they are before you hastening.
[Al Quran ; 70:36]
عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ (37)
On the right and on the left in separate groups.
[Al Quran ; 70:37]
أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ أَنْ يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ (38)
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
[Al Quran ; 70:38]
كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُمْ مِمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ (39)
No! Indeed, We created them from that which they know.
[Al Quran ; 70:39]
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ (40)
So I swear by the Lord of the easts and wests, indeed, We are surely Capable.
[Al Quran ; 70:40]
عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ (41)
To replace them with better than them, and We are not to be outdone.
[Al Quran ; 70:41]
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ (42)
So leave them talking vanity and playing until they meet their day which they are promised.
[Al Quran ; 70:42]
يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ (43)
The day they will emerge from the graves quickly as if they were toward an erected an idol, hastening.
[Al Quran ; 70:43]
خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ (44)
Their visions are humbled; humiliation will overwhelm them. That is the day which they had been promised.
