Al-Mujadalah (The Disputer)
Translation
Verses 1-22
بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
قَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَوْلَ الَّتِي تُجَادِلُكَ فِي زَوْجِهَا وَتَشْتَكِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ يَسْمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَا ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ (1)
Allah has certainly heard the saying of the one who disputes with you concerning her husband and complains to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing, Seeing.
[Al Quran ; 58:1]
الَّذِينَ يُظَاهِرُونَ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ مَا هُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِهِمْ ۖ إِنْ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ إِلَّا اللَّائِي وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَقُولُونَ مُنْكَرًا مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَزُورًا ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ (2)
Those among you who prohibit their women (upon themselves), they are not their mothers, their mothers are none except those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they say an evil saying and falsehood; and indeed, Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving.
[Al Quran ; 58:2]
وَالَّذِينَ يُظَاهِرُونَ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَتَمَاسَّا ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ (3)
And those who prohibit their women (upon themselves) then retreat what they have said, then (there must be) the freeing of a neck (a slave) before they touch each other. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allah is over what you do Acquainted.
[Al Quran ; 58:3]
فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَتَمَاسَّا ۖ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ۚ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ ۗ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (4)
And whoever does not find (a slave), then the fasting for two consecutive months before they touch each other; and whoever is unable (to fast), then the feeding of sixty needy persons. That is for you to believe in Allah and His messenger, and those are the limits of Allah. And for the unbelievers will be a painful torture.
[Al Quran ; 58:4]
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ كُبِتُوا كَمَا كُبِتَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ وَقَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ ۚ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ (5)
Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His messenger will be abased as those before them were abased. And We have sent down clear signs; and for the unbelievers will be a humiliating torture.
[Al Quran ; 58:5]
يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعًا فَيُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا ۚ أَحْصَاهُ اللَّهُ وَنَسُوهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ (6)
The day Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did; Allah has recorded it while they have forgotten it. And Allah is over everything Witness.
[Al Quran ; 58:6]
أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ ۖ مَا يَكُونُ مِنْ نَجْوَىٰ ثَلَاثَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ رَابِعُهُمْ وَلَا خَمْسَةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ سَادِسُهُمْ وَلَا أَدْنَىٰ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَا أَكْثَرَ إِلَّا هُوَ مَعَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كَانُوا ۖ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ (7)
Have you not seen that Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth? There is no private consultation between three except that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five except that He is the sixth of them, and no less than that or more except that He is with them wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the day of resurrection. Indeed, Allah is, of everything, Knowing.
[Al Quran ; 58:7]
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ نُهُوا عَنِ النَّجْوَىٰ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَيَتَنَاجَوْنَ بِالْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ الرَّسُولِ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ وَيَقُولُونَ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَوْلَا يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ ۚ حَسْبُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ يَصْلَوْنَهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ (8)
Have you not seen those who were forbidden from private consultation, then they return to that which they were forbidden, and they consult privately between themselves about sin and perpetration and disobedience to the messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that by which Allah does not greet you, and they say among themselves: Why does Allah not punish us for what we say? Sufficient for them will be hell, they are going to reach it; and miserable is the destination.
[Al Quran ; 58:8]
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا تَنَاجَيْتُمْ فَلَا تَتَنَاجَوْا بِالْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَتِ الرَّسُولِ وَتَنَاجَوْا بِالْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ الَّذِي إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ (9)
O you who have believed! When you consult privately between yourselves, then do not consult privately about sin and perpetration and disobedience to the messenger but consult privately with each other about righteousness and piety. And fear Allah, to Whom you will be gathered.
[Al Quran ; 58:9]
إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَىٰ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَيْسَ بِضَارِّهِمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ (10)
Private consultation is only from the devil that he may cause grieve to those who have believed, but he will not harm them in anything except with the permission of Allah. And upon Allah let the believers rely.
[Al Quran ; 58:10]
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا فِي الْمَجَالِسِ فَافْسَحُوا يَفْسَحِ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا قِيلَ انْشُزُوا فَانْشُزُوا يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ (11)
O you who have believed! When it is said to you: Space yourselves, in assemblies, then make space, Allah will make space for you. And when it is said: Arise. Then arise, Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is, with what you do, Acquainted.
[Al Quran ; 58:11]
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نَاجَيْتُمُ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَةً ۚ ذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَأَطْهَرُ ۚ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (12)
O you who have believed! When you consult privately with the messenger, then present before your consultation a charity; that is good for you and purer; but if you could not find (the means), then indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
[Al Quran ; 58:12]
أَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَنْ تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَاتٍ ۚ فَإِذْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَتَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ (13)
Have you feared that you will not (be able to) present before your consultation charities? So when you do not do it and Allah has forgiven you, then establish prayer and pay Zakat (Alms) and obey Allah and His messenger. And Allah is, with what you do, Acquainted.
[Al Quran ; 58:13]
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا هُمْ مِنْكُمْ وَلَا مِنْهُمْ وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ (14)
Have you not seen those who make allies with a people upon whom Allah has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear upon lies while they know.
[Al Quran ; 58:14]
أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا ۖ إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (15)
Allah has prepared for them a severe torture; indeed, miserable is what they used to do.
[Al Quran ; 58:15]
اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ (16)
They took their oaths as a cover so they hindered from the way of Allah. And for them will be a humiliating torture.
[Al Quran ; 58:16]
لَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلَا أَوْلَادُهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئًا ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ (17)
Never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah in anything. It is them who are the companions of the fire, they are therein abiding.
[Al Quran ; 58:17]
يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعًا فَيَحْلِفُونَ لَهُ كَمَا يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ ۖ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَىٰ شَيْءٍ ۚ أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ (18)
The day Allah will resurrect them all, then they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are (standing) on something. Unquestionably, it is them who are the liars.
[Al Quran ; 58:18]
اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَأَنْسَاهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ حِزْبُ الشَّيْطَانِ ۚ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ الشَّيْطَانِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ (19)
The devil has possessed them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah; it is them who are party of the devil. Unquestionably, the party of the devil will be the losers.
[Al Quran ; 58:19]
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ أُولَٰئِكَ فِي الْأَذَلِّينَ (20)
Indeed, (as for) the ones who oppose Allah and His messenger; it is them who will be among the most humiliated.
[Al Quran ; 58:20]
كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ (21)
Allah has decreed, I will surely prevail, I and My messengers. Indeed, Allah is Strong, Mighty.
[Al Quran ; 58:21]
لَا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُمْ بِرُوحٍ مِنْهُ ۖ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ۚ أُولَٰئِكَ حِزْبُ اللَّهِ ۚ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ (22)
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the last day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred; it is them in whose hearts He decreed faith and supported them with a spirit from Him, and He will admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him, it is them who are the party of Allah. Unquestionably, the party of Allah will be the successful.
