Al-Qalam (The Pen)

Translation

Verses 1-30

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ (1)

Noon; by the pen and what they (the angels) write.
[Al Quran ; 68:1]

مَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ (2)

You are not, by the favour of your Lord, a madman.
[Al Quran ; 68:2]

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ (3)

And indeed, for you is surely a reward never cut off.
[Al Quran ; 68:3]

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ (4)

And indeed, you are of a great morals.
[Al Quran ; 68:4]

فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ (5)

And you will see and they will see.
[Al Quran ; 68:5]

بِأَيْيِكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ (6)

Which of you is tried.
[Al Quran ; 68:6]

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ (7)

Indeed, your Lord is most Knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most Knowing of the guided (ones).
[Al Quran ; 68:7]

فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ (8)

So do not obey the deniers.
[Al Quran ; 68:8]

وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ (9)

They wish that you soften, so they would soften.
[Al Quran ; 68:9]

وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَهِينٍ (10)

And do not obey every worthless swearer.
[Al Quran ; 68:10]

هَمَّازٍ مَشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ (11)

Scorner, going about with malicious gossip.
[Al Quran ; 68:11]

مَنَّاعٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ (12)

Forbidder of good, sinful perpetrator.
[Al Quran ; 68:12]

عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ (13)

Ignoble, moreover, of a bad character.
[Al Quran ; 68:13]

أَنْ كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ (14)

Because he was possessor of wealth and sons.
[Al Quran ; 68:14]

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ (15)

When Our signs were recited to him, he said: Legends of the former (people).
[Al Quran ; 68:15]

سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ (16)

We will mark him over the snout.
[Al Quran ; 68:16]

إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ (17)

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut the produce (of the tree) in the morning.
[Al Quran ; 68:17]

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ (18)

Without making an exception.
[Al Quran ; 68:18]

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِنْ رَبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ (19)

So there came to it an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.
[Al Quran ; 68:19]

فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ (20)

And it became as though reaped produce.
[Al Quran ; 68:20]

فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ (21)

And they called one another in the morning.
[Al Quran ; 68:21]

أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَارِمِينَ (22)

(Saying:) Go early to your crop if you would cut the produce.
[Al Quran ; 68:22]

فَانْطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ (23)

So they set out, while lowering their voices.
[Al Quran ; 68:23]

أَنْ لَا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِسْكِينٌ (24)

(Saying:) There will surely not enter it today upon you, (any) needy.
[Al Quran ; 68:24]

وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ (25)

And they went early in determination.
[Al Quran ; 68:25]

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ (26)

But when they saw it, they said: Indeed, we are lost.
[Al Quran ; 68:26]

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ (27)

Rather, we have been deprived.
[Al Quran ; 68:27]

قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُلْ لَكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ (28)

The most moderate of them said: Have I not said to you, why do you not glorify (Allah)?
[Al Quran ; 68:28]

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ (29)

They said: Glory be to our Lord; indeed, we were unjust.
[Al Quran ; 68:29]

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ (30)

Then they approached one another, blaming each other.
[Al Quran ; 68:30]

Translation

Verses 31-52

قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ (31)

They said: O woe to us; indeed, we were tyrants.
[Al Quran ; 68:31]

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَنْ يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ (32)

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us better than it. Indeed, we are, to our Lord, desirous.
[Al Quran ; 68:32]

كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ (33)

Thus is the torture, and surely the torture of the hereafter is greater, if they only knew.
[Al Quran ; 68:33]

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ (34)

Indeed, the pious will have with their Lord gardens of pleasure.
[Al Quran ; 68:34]

أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ (35)

So, will We make the submitters like the criminals?
[Al Quran ; 68:35]

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ (36)

What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
[Al Quran ; 68:36]

أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ (37)

Or do you have a book in which you study.
[Al Quran ; 68:37]

إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ (38)

That indeed, for you therein is what you choose?
[Al Quran ; 68:38]

أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ (39)

Or do you have oaths upon Us, extending to the day of resurrection, that indeed, for you is whatever you judge?
[Al Quran ; 68:39]

سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ (40)

Ask them, which of them, for that, is claiming.
[Al Quran ; 68:40]

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ (41)

Or for them are associates? So let them bring their associates, if they should be truthful.
[Al Quran ; 68:41]

يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ (42)

The day the shin will be uncovered and they will be called to prostration but they will not be able (to prostrate).
[Al Quran ; 68:42]

خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ (43)

Humbled will be their visions, humiliation will exhaust them; and they used to be called to prostration while they were safe.
[Al Quran ; 68:43]

فَذَرْنِي وَمَنْ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُمْ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (44)

So leave Me with whoever denies this speech (Quran); We will progressively lead them from where they do not know.
[Al Quran ; 68:44]

وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ (45)

And I will extend for them time; indeed, My plan is firm.
[Al Quran ; 68:45]

أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ (46)

Or do you ask of them a reward, so they are by debt burdened?
[Al Quran ; 68:46]

أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ (47)

Or do they have (the knowledge of) the unseen, so they write (it) down?
[Al Quran ; 68:47]

فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُنْ كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ (48)

And be patient for the judgment of your Lord, and be not like the companion of the whale, when he called out while he was distressed.
[Al Quran ; 68:48]

لَوْلَا أَنْ تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ (49)

If not that a favour from his Lord overtook him, he would have been left in the naked land while he was condemned.
[Al Quran ; 68:49]

فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ (50)

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.
[Al Quran ; 68:50]

وَإِنْ يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ (51)

And those who have disbelieved would almost make you slip with their visions when they hear the reminder; and they say: Indeed, he is surely madman.
[Al Quran ; 68:51]

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ (52)

But it is naught except a reminder to the worlds.
[Al Quran ; 68:52]
